Shortly before Bill Clinton spoke in Homewood last week, a small parade of people chanting "Freedom" marched down Frankstown Avenue. As the marchers passed the Homewood Coliseum, those waiting in line to hear the former president began to applaud. They understood the procession was in memory of the Rev. Eugene "Freedom" Blackwell.
Gene's funeral was held next door to the coliseum, at the same time of Clinton's speech -- a fact Clinton noted in his remarks.
Many of us met and worked with Gene through House of Manna, and he was instrumental in helping CPCBA through a difficult transition several hears ago. Gene stepped boldly in his faith, always moving forward, bringing people together and solving problems through love and unity. He was a beautiful example to us all. Our prayers are with his family.
