Our Church Staff
Rev. dr. Donna Giver-Johnston
I am a child of God--created in God’s image, redeemed by the grace of Jesus Christ, sustained by the Holy Spirit.
I am also a daughter and a sister, a wife and a mother, a daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, and aunt.
I was born in Pennsylvania and have also lived in Michigan, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, and Tennessee.
I was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church and ordained in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
I have worked as a newspaper deliverer, custodian, and fast food clerk. I have worked for corporations and colleges, the federal government and the church. I have volunteered with inner-city kids and homeless men and women, elderly folks and families of Habitat for Humanity.
My most challenging and rewarding job is being a Mom. I find great joy in the loving support from my husband Brian and from sharing a laugh with my children Rebecca and Christian.
We have a rescue dog named Sadie, who loves walks and treats.
I love to read and learn, do yoga and swim, listen to music and write. I love to ask questions!
I have traveled to 29 states (21 more to go!). I made pilgrimages to Taizé, Iona and the Holy Land.
I have degrees from Vanderbilt University (PhD and MA), Princeton Seminary (MDiv), and Westminster College (BA) and a certificate of spiritual formation from Pittsburgh and Columbia Seminaries.
My favorite book is The Poisonwood Bible. My favorite movie is Out of Africa. My favorite hymn is God is Here! My daily devotion is a Psalm. Some of my favorite music includes Martina McBride and and Mozart, Benedictines of Mary and Bruce Springsteen.
I get a glimpse of heaven when I am gathered with friends around the dinner table, enjoying nourishing food and fun fellowship, good red wine and a delicious chocolate dessert!
Melanie Holcomb is our Director of Christian Education. She returned to this position after a 7 year hiatus from the job, during which she opened The Fire Escape coffee shop in Ben Avon. Melanie is an 11 year resident of Ben Avon along with her mother, her husband, her teenager, her dog and her guinea pig.
Her work encompasses the education opportunities for the community from "cradle to grave", as they say in the business. Everything from the Nursery through Youth Group and Adult classes. Her passion for this work comes from having a lame Sunday School as a child but a great Youth Group. Turns out church CAN be fun and interesting!
Melanie is fascinated by the lives of ordinary folks with everyday struggles and obstacles who end up doing great things. This is true of the stories of the Bible and of her friends and neighbors who inspire her. It gives her great comfort to see how many times people like Jonah and most of the disciples get it wrong, but God patiently shepherds them along til they get it right. It gives her hope for herself.

She was born and raised in the North Boroughs and she now resides in Ohio Township with her husband, 2 boys and black Labrador Retriever. Tracey previously worked as the Director of Marketing and Medical Relation for an Eye Care Practice.
Her work here at the church includes everything from greeting individuals, answering phones, weekly financial reports, monthly payroll, monthly newsletters, annual reports, etc., to handing out stickers to our Wooden Ladder Preschoolers (her favorite part!)
Tracey has really enjoys the time she spends here at Community Church - the people she greets, the individuals she works with and the children that make her day!
